Ultrasound has become an essential technology in the detection
and diagnosis of breast cancer. At the Pink Lotus Breast Center,
all of our surgical breast specialists and radiologists are
expertly trained in the latest Ultrasound technology. Our
primary use of breast Ultrasound at PLBC is to help diagnose
abnormalities detected in your breast during a clinical
breast exam
(such as a lump) and to characterize any abnormalities seen on a
routine or diagnostic
mammogram.
While digital
Mammography is the standard for breast
cancer screening, some breast lesions and abnormalities are not
visible or are difficult to interpret on mammograms. In breasts
that are dense, meaning there is a lot of glandular tissue and
less fat, many cancers can be hard to see or may even be missed
by a mammogram. Particularly in women with dense breasts,
ultrasound has been shown to complement mammography by helping
to detect smaller breast cancers that may not be visible
otherwise.
If needed, our surgical breast specialists and radiologists can
obtain tissue to diagnose a breast abnormality by performing an
ultrasound-guided
biopsy. Because ultrasound technology provides
real-time images of your breast and avoids both the compression
and the radiation of mammograms, it is an ideal way to guide a
biopsy needle into a suspicious area for sampling.
