Named after Dr. Kristi Funk, who started the program in 2005, the Funk Buddies is a group of breast cancer survivors who individually pair with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients for the purposes of friendship and emotional support. These women frequently find themselves deeply connected to each other, bound together in a sacred sisterhood of survivors. They come alongside one another over the phone or a cup of coffee, united by a disease and by common doctors, but always unique in their stories and their fight. Periodically, different chapters of the Funk Buddies meet as a whole to exchange hugs and laughter, and when they do, a greater sense of healing inevitably follows, as all share a unique gratitude for life itself.
